Solving linear relationships involves determining what the value of the variable is. I will usually tell students the first step is to move everything with a variable on one side of the equal sign and all the numbers to the other side of the equal sign.

Another form of interpreting the linear relation is with the parametric equation of a line. In this form we have an unknown or parameter value. Depending on how many parameters there are we determine the type of “plane” we have. In our case here we will see one parameter indicating that we have a line.
