No. No one is stupid. But, you’re not doing yourself any favours if you let a problem persist and you continue to struggle. The act of working through a problem can be valuable. Just like any practice, it’s best done regularly even if it seems impossible at times. However, struggling to the point where you are not making any progress, isn’t good place to be either. It leads to feeling bad about yourself, grades suffering, feelings of hopelessness and wanting to give up. Just before getting to that point, the “smartest” and “wisest” thing to do is to recognize it and get some help. In many cases the best way to get help is through a private tutor.
Why is a private tutor a good decision?
- A private tutor will get to know you and your needs.
- They will take the time to understand what you’re struggling with, what your challenges are with the material; what your strengths are, all things a teacher with a classroom of students cannot do.
- You will have someone to have a conversation with about the subject, not just have someone lecture at you.
- You’ll have someone you can tell that you’ve had a busy day and couldn’t do all your homework and not just “mark you” on what you haven’t completed.
- A tutor is there to help you understand and interpret the notes and material that was presented during your class at school.
- They are there to help you get ahead and develop your strengths so you know how best to use them when you’re on your own.
- A tutor is in your corner, there to help you perform to your fullest potential and meet your goals, not the goals of the school system.
Think of your tutor as a coach helping you with your training. If you play a sport, you train after school or after practice on your own. Studying isn’t much different and having that private tutor or coach is an additional means of developing your strength, skills and proficiency in that subject so you can perform when you need to.
The stigma surrounding having to get tutoring isn’t the same as it used to be. There is a more positive connotation surrounding having that external and extra support and help system. It is an investment in yourself and your future. And that’s the smartest thing anyone can do for themselves and those they care about.
Now not everyone can afford a private tutor. Learning centres are a good alternative to private, one on one support. Discover valuable pros and cons of learning centres.
