Math tools

The World Wide Web is a huge place and a big part of our lives.   There are many tools on the internet to help with many of our daily tasks.  The number math tools and apps out there is staggering.   We have started curating a list of math, statistical, data and technical related tools and links.  All these math tools and links we have learnt about through our students, our personal experience or research to serve you better.

Our first list of math tools includes calculators and graphing tools.  While we advocate using exact values and avoiding a calculator as much as possible, there are times when those calculated results are required.   Most of the graphing and curve sketching we work on with students does not require graphing technology.  But, there are times when it is good to be able to check our work.  Desmos is a popular graphing tool and calculator recommended by many teachers and schools.  Meta-Calculator is many calculators in one.  This even includes a statistical calculator and matrix calculator!  Browse through our lists and see what works for you.

Online Whiteboards

You may be wondering what online whiteboards have to do with mathematics?  Well, a lot when a pandemic hits and most of the world’s population has been sent home!

In 2020 people around the world were instructed to social distance and minimize their social interactions. This included going shopping, eating at restaurants, hair cuts and more!  But more importantly, it meant many offices were closes and people were sent home to work, and students were sent home and had learn online.  An online whiteboard was now very important!  While schools and organizations used  their institutional recommended tools, we did our own research at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 for the best online whiteboard for our students.  You can find details on this Online Whiteboard Review in our math blog.  We settled on awwapp.com and have been using this for our online tutoring.  However, it has since been acquired by Miro.com and we will moving over to Miro in July 2021.  Try them out.  They both offer free trials.

Online Convertors

What’s an online converter, you’re probably wondering?  And why use one?  Good question. With all the technology out there and formats files can come in, converter from one to the other for certain technologies, is required. For example, awwapp.com did not support the .heic extension for images that iPhones generate so and heic tojpg converter was necessary.  Mathpix snip is a great “converter” of sorts that we found during 2021 and we hope to start implementing very soon!

Other

These “other” tools listed below are still math and statistics related but perhaps not as widely used by high school students.  However, beyond the high school level, at the post secondary and industry level, the tools and links below will have more use.  Latex is a math typesetting tool that has been around for decades.  R is a statistical “programming” language that is used by those that work with statistics and data.
