What is Group Math Tutoring?

What is group math tutoring?  Group math tutoring is more than the traditional small group tutoring.  Our group math tutoring is geared towards a group of students all working towards a common goal.  For example, IB students working towards preparing for their IB math exams; AP calculus students preparing for their calculus exams; Grade 11 students preparing for the exam or wanting some supplemental training; Grade 12 Advanced Functions students all working towards getting the best grade in their course for university admission.  You get the idea.

Benefits

  • Working together with peer with a similar mindset.
  • Working with others working towards a similar goal.
  • Everyone is there to better themselves; get stronger; do better.
  • Learning from and with others that share the same challenges.
  • Opportunity to discuss and ask questions, not just listening and watching a lecture.
  • There is a coach facilitating and guiding the session so that it is a collaborative experience for all.
  • That sense of “team” and not being alone with the confusion, frustration and doubt.
  • Helps build independence, confidence and self learning skills

Who is suited to group math tutoring?

  • Everyone can benefit from group math coaching.   It can be a graduation from private tutoring to guidance that is not as hands on allowing the student to slowly develop the independence and confidence to learn and work on their own in a supervised environment.
  • It is ideal for those wanting to review before heading into their math course.  So it is ideal as a refresher course.
  • It is great as a supplementary help for students that are currently taking a related course.  Not every student needs one on one help all the time but that chance to ask questions once in awhile, makes all the difference.
  • Students that are able to discipline themselves for self study.
  • IB math students preparing for IB exams or want to keep their math skills sharp.
  • Students taking or intending to take AP calculus AB or BC.

Our sessions

All our group math tutoring sessions have the same structure, unless otherwise stated.

  • 4-6 weeks long.  Exact duration will be given in session description along with start and end dates.
  • 2 hours of collaborative online time with the group and the group coach.  How this time is used will be outlined in the session description and will also evolve depending on the dynamic of the group.  No two groups are the same.
  • Practice worksheets for each week of the session. These are meant to be supplemental material for the students to work on.
  • A video for each week of the session presenting the material for the week’s topic and exercises.

Ultimately, what a student gets out of the group tutoring session is really dependent on what the student puts into the session.  We are looking forward to working with you and your children.
