Different countries have different currencies or money. One Canadian dollar doesn’t necessarily equal or buy the same amount as say one US dollar. While travel is restricted and most of us aren’t able to plan and trips abroad, we can look at the different currencies around the world and see how much one Canadian dollar is valued in the currencies of other countries. Below is an online currency converter.
Currency converter
Pick a few countries that you find interesting. Perhaps you’ve visited them before; perhaps you want to visit them some day. How the currency converter works:
- Under, “Currency I have”, choose the country you have money for. I’m in Canada, so I choose Canadian dollar. There is a little flag that helps find the country.
- Under Canadian dollar there is an “Amount”, put in the among of money in that currency that you have. I have one loonie. ☹. So I have put in 1 for the amount I have.
- Under “Currency I want”, choose the country you are hoping to visit. I’m thinking I’d like to visit Norway when all this is over. So I choose the flag for Norway. Now it says “Norwegian Kroner”. Notice that it doesn’t give the name of the country but the name of the currency they have in that country. So in Norway their currency is called a “kroner”.
- Now under the Norwegian Kroner the “Amount” showing is the number of Kroners that one Canadian dollar will give you.
Repeat this for process for a few different countries you want to visit or find interesting and their currencies. Below is an example of a table, one column with the currency and the second column with the value of one Canadian dollar in that currency.

Now let’s go shopping!
Let’s go shopping on Amazon! Maybe not for real but it’s fun to pretend. There is Amazon specifically for Canada which can be found below.
On this Amazon site all the prices are in Canadian dollars. This is convenient. Suppose we’re in another country or have another country’s currency, let’s see how much an item on Amazon for that country and currency would be.
At the link below we can choose the currency that we want to see all the products listed in on Amazon.
- If we go to Currency Settings, we can choose the currency we are interested in.
I have chosen the Norwegian Kroner again. Now all the prices of items on Amazon are given in the Norwegian Kroner. For example, 36 Bic ballpoint pens, medium point and black costs $12.78 Canadian dollars and 57.43 Norwegian Kroners. (This price will change every day since the “conversion rate” between currencies changes daily.) We can look up the price of these pens on Amazon in different currencies. Below is a sample table.
Choose a few items that you are interested in on Amazon and check how much they cost in different currencies.
