The current social distancing and social isolation is slowly leading to a new normal. This new normal includes many aspects: social, work, learning/education, family. It is amazing how much that was in person is being attempted online especially in the instructional and educational industry. This doesn’t just include formal education but also self education, personal interest, certifications and more.
While social distancing, face masks, closing of “non-essential” business were all towards an effort to “flatten the curve” and lesson the immediate effect of the coronavirus, we want to help minimize and possible eliminate the sides effects of these efforts, the primary one being education or the lack of over the past few months. The next posts will provide more ways to help prevent the covid slide over the next few months before September 2020 and the new school year starts. We will offer examples, tips, resources and more.
Math and many of the sciences seem to be traditionally male dominated professions. This doesn’t mean that only men have contributed to these fields. Below is a short list of notable female mathematicians throughout history. There are many more and please let us know of an equally notable female mathematician we have missed from the list below. We will definitely update our list. Below is a brief introduction to each of these women. While each received many awards and held important positions in the academic and mathematical community, their greatest impact was that they preserved in a predominantly male discipline helping to pave the way for the next generation of female mathematicians. Let’s look at the numbers of women studying mathematics and STEM related subjects. We’ll also look women in STEM related jobs, how many, how much they earn and some of the possible reasons why there are not more than there are. We will also look at some positives. Women in STEM careers do earn 35% more than women in non-STEM careers.
